When to convert WebP to PNG for compatibility
Use PNG when an editor or workflow needs broader compatibility or preserved transparency, then check the output size.
Open WebP to PNG and select a supported image, keeping the original WebP for reference.
Convert to PNG when you need wider software support or want transparent areas preserved.
Open the new copy in the intended app or form and check transparency, clarity, and size before relying on it.
When PNG helps with compatibility
A WebP image may need conversion when an editor, document workflow, or upload form does not accept WebP. Check the destination's accepted formats first; PNG can be a useful compatibility copy, while WebP may remain the better choice for web delivery.
Transparency depends on the source
PNG supports transparency. If the WebP contains transparent pixels and the converter preserves its alpha channel, those areas can remain transparent in the PNG. Open the result in an app that displays transparency rather than relying only on a white preview background.
Expect a possible size increase
PNG is lossless for the decoded pixels, but the output is often larger than WebP. Converting a lossy WebP does not recover detail that was discarded earlier. Check the result size and visual quality before using it in a size-limited upload.
Keep the right master copy
Retain the original WebP for web delivery and future reference. Use the PNG when its compatibility or transparency is needed, and verify the exported copy in the receiving app before replacing or deleting anything.
