When to convert PNG to JPG before uploading
Use JPG when a site requires it or a smaller photographic copy helps; keep PNG for transparency, crisp edges, or further editing.
Open PNG to JPG and select a supported file within the displayed limit, keeping the original copy.
Check that JPG suits the image: it cannot preserve transparency, and compression can soften text or fine edges.
Convert one copy and inspect its background, clarity, and size before uploading or sharing it.
Conversion is lossy, not an upgrade
PNG is lossless, while JPG re-encodes with lossy compression. The JPG may be a useful copy for compatibility or smaller photographic uploads, but it cannot add detail or improve the source image.
When JPG is a practical target
Convert when a destination explicitly requires JPG or when a photographic image needs a smaller sharing copy. File-size savings vary by image; compare the actual output instead of assuming every PNG will shrink.
Check transparency and fine edges
JPG cannot preserve transparency, and its background may look different after conversion. Compression may also soften small text, screenshots, or sharp line art. Keep PNG for transparent graphics and text-heavy images unless the destination requires JPG.
Review the output before uploading
Convert a copy, then inspect its background, dimensions, file size, and clarity against the receiving site's rules. Keep the original PNG for future edits or if the JPG result is not suitable.
