When to convert JPG to PNG before uploading an image
Choose PNG when you need cleaner-looking text or edges, then check the file size before you upload it to a form or website.
Open the image tool in JPG to PNG mode and select a supported, non-empty JPG.
Convert the image and download the new copy before deciding whether to delete the original.
Compare size and appearance. PNG may be larger than JPG, so prefer it when clear text or graphics matter more than a smaller file.
Conversion does not restore lost detail
JPG compression can discard image information. Converting JPG to PNG places the existing decoded image in a lossless PNG file; it cannot recreate detail that is no longer in the source. Keep the JPG original if you need the smaller sharing copy.
When PNG is useful
Choose PNG when a destination specifically requires it, or when you want a lossless container for later editing. Converting does not create transparency in an ordinary JPG and does not improve a soft or blurry source.
Photos and graphics behave differently
For photographs, PNG is often larger than JPG with little visible benefit. For screenshots, diagrams, or text-heavy images, PNG can avoid adding another round of JPEG artifacts during later edits. Check the target app's format requirements before converting.
Inspect and keep both copies
Open the PNG at normal size and inspect fine edges or text, then compare its size with the source. Keep the original JPG and use the PNG only where its compatibility or lossless-editing characteristics are useful.
